Further evidence for carotenoids engaged in a metastable state in photosynthesis.

چکیده
During photosynthesis a metastable state with a half life of ~ 3 jus has been observed which probably represents a valve for superfluous excitation energy 1. The difference spectrum caused by the formation of this state shows three pronounced negative peaks in the blue spectral range (at 430, 460 and 490 nm). Therefore probably a carotenoid is involved. Because of the negative peak at 430 nm the participation of chlorophyll-a could not be excluded. But in this case there must occur additionally absorption changes in the red spectral range between 660 and 705 nm where chlorophyll-a in vivo has its second absorption band but not the carotenoids. Measurement of fast and small absorption changes within microseconds can, however, not be carried out by the normal ultra-short-flash photometry apparatus1 in the red spectral range because of the ££ 104 times larger chlorophyll fluorescence at the same wavelengths. This fluorescence can, however, be eliminated from interference with absorption changes by a special apparatus allowing time resolution of about 1 jus2. With this apparatus we succeeded in extending the difference spectrum in question into the red region. No absorption changes of ~ 3 jus life time take place in the red. Therefore only carotenoids are responsible for the observed metastable state. This has already been reported in1 . The experimental documents and details on these measurements in the red region are presented in this paper.

Promoting Researchers and Policy-Makers Collaboration in Evidence-Informed Policy-Making in Nigeria: Outcome of a Two-Way Secondment Model between University and Health Ministry
Background There is need to strengthen institutions and mechanisms that can more systematically promote interactions between researchers, policy-makers and other stakeholders who can influence the uptake of research findings. In this article, we report the outcome of a two-way secondment model between Ebonyi State University (EBSU) and Ebonyi State Ministry of Health (ESMoH) in Nigeria as an in...

متن کاملMechanism of the Allomerization of Chlorophyll: Inhibition of the Allomerization by Carotenoid Pigments
Autooxidation of Chlorophyll, Free Radicals, Carotenoids, Photosynthesis It is shown that the allomerization of chlorophylls a and b is effectively inhibited by carotenoid pigments. In the light of this finding, two possible mechanisms are considered for the allomerization. One assumes the addition of singlet oxygen to the 9,10-double bond of the chlorophyll (Chi) enolate anion to yield a C-10 ...

Carotenoids, Photosynthesis, Quinones, Xanthophyll Cycle The interconversion of carotenoids and quinones was investigated in beech and spinach leaves as well as isolated intact spinach chloroplasts following a dark-light transition. It is shown that isolated intact chloroplasts which are preincubated for 2 h at pH 7.6 in the dark and re illuminated with strong white light are capable not only ...

Response of tea plants to B deficiency was studied in hydroponic medium under environmentally controlled conditions. Plants height, number of leaves and dry matter production of shoot and root were significantly decreased by B deficiency. Concentration of chlorophyll, carotenoids, anthocyanins and flavonoids was not affected by B deficiency in the young leaf, while a significant reduction of Ch...
